Hugh Robertson awarded Emeritus Award for his work on London 2012

Sir Hugh Robertson, the Member of Parliament for Faversham and Mid Kent, has been awarded the Sport and Recreation Alliance’s prestigious Emeritus Award for his contribution to sport during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. He is only the fourth ever recipient of the award following Dame Mary Peters, Dame Diana Ellis and Bill Slater.

The award was presented by the Sport and Recreation Alliance at a dinner to mark the end of their Leadership Conference attended by over 200 delegates. It was introduced to honour those people who had made ‘ an exemplary contribution to sport and recreation in this country’.

The citation recorded Hugh’s work as Olympics Minister during London 2012 which helped deliver a Games regarded as one of the best ever of recent times and a legacy that is regarded as a blueprint for future Games by the IOC. As Sports Minister, he presided over one of the most successful ever periods in British sport and helped deliver the largest ever number of major sports events to this country.

Sir Hugh said:

‘It is a huge honour to be given this award to mark my time as Sports and Olympics Minister. However, the really important thing is that sport does not sit on its laurels, post 2012, but makes the most of the opportunities provided to grow even stronger in the years ahead, particularly in clubs and schools, and there is much work still to do.’
